It is a vatting of so-called designer casks, from the Ozark Mountains. Astar is Gaelic for ‘the Journey’, referring to Dr Lumsden’s seach for these casks. They were are-dried for two years, heavily toasted, but only slightly charred. Despite the fact that there is no age statement on the bottle, insiders tell us it is around 10 years old. Anyway, enough lecturing, let us taste. It starts with the release of the 1963 vintage in 1987, then moves on to the original Glenmorangie 18 Year Old launch in 1990. A Port Wood Finish follows in 1994, Madeira and Tain l’Hermitage in 1995, and a fully-formed Glenmorangie Wood Finish Range in 1996. Glenmorange Distillery Visit". Royalmilewhiskies.com. Rumor has it that the whisky in Astar is just a hair’s breadth over ten years old, but it tastes more like a twelve. One thing’s for sure: it beats the pants off Glenmorangie’s standard 10-year-old, which is sometimes my choice in bars that don’t have more craft-oriented Scotches on the shelf. We live in an age where we are bombarded by stories about the wood, and many major figures in the whisky community do nothing but recycle these wood-fetishes without a second thought. But we should examine what is being said. It’s the usual way of converting your crop to make more money and use the by-products to feed your cattle and pigs,’ explains Iain Russell, brands heritage manager at Glenmorangie. ‘It’s a traditional farm distillery.’Yes, and I can tell you this is my most favourite Glenmorangie what I ever tasted yet. What Glenmorangie said that this dram have infleunces of crème brulee, it is. The nose tells me that there are a lot of spices, deep dark warm sweetness of roasted caramel and crème brulee. The taste is for me a bit strong but the tastefull sweetness comes fullbodied over. Tastes like vanilla, fruity as peach and orange, sugary and some citrus notes after. The finish is long but very complex, honey, menthol and anise like at the end.

Glenmorangie Distillery Profile". The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Archived from the original on 15 June 2011 . Retrieved 29 September 2007. In Scottish Gaelic, “Astar” literally means “journey,” and oh, how far the industry has come since 2008. As you will see from my tasting notes (below), Astar is a whisky that makes no apologies for being NAS. In fact, its wood presence is more than a little conspicuous, in a good way. According to Dr. Bill, the whisky is made from “slow growth, air seasoned, heavily toasted, lightly charred, ex-bourbon, American oak barrels.” That statement is music to my ears. After hearing such a happy pronouncement, I was quite eager to taste the whisky that came from Missouri Ozark casks, and I also wondered which sort of bourbon had formerly been aged in them. Over the last five years Glenmorangie has won more "Gold Best in Class" awards than any other single malt Scotch whisky from the International Wine and Spirits Competition. [28] In 2012, the IWSC awarded The Glenmorangie Company the title Distiller of the Year.Astar – Scots Gaelic for ‘journey’– is matured entirely in ‘bespoke’ oak casks sourced from slow-growing trees on north-facing slopes in the Ozark mountains of Missouri. Glenmorangie distillery (pronounced with the stress on the second syllable: listen ⓘ; the toponym is believed to derive from either Gaelic Gleann Mòr na Sìth " vale of tranquillity" or Gleann Mór-innse " vale of big meadows") [3] is a distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, that produces single malt Scotch whisky. Glenmorangie Quarter Century wins Best Highland Single Malt award". Archived from the original on 12 May 2013 . Retrieved 10 May 2013. The worst aspects are exacerbated at the bottled strength; for one of the first times, I believe this malt should have been bottled at 43%. My rating reflects the addition of water; otherwise I would rate the Astar at most 75 neat, without exaggerating my feelings. To turn lemons into lemonade, I could imagine using this as a very nice palate cleanser, either as an apertif or in between plates of a multi-course meal. (However, it should not be used during a whisky tasting flight, as the menthol will contaminate subsequent whiskies!)

On the nose: citrus, almost warm lemonade. Custard cream biscuits. Grassy. It needs a lot of time to settle before some rather nice perfumed notes begin to show: jasmine. Rose fragrance, the kind that ladies of a certain age tend to wear. Then a creamy vanilla, lemon curd and custard. Very custardy, in fact, with touches of condensed milk. The distillery is owned by The Glenmorangie Company Ltd (a subsidiary of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), whose main product is the range of Glenmorangie single malt whisky. Glenmorangie is categorised as a Highland distillery and boasts the tallest stills in Scotland. [4] It is available in Original, 18-, and 25-year-old bottlings, special cask bottlings, cask finishes, extra matured bottlings, and a range of special edition bottlings. So far in our story our heroes (my wife, myself, my brother and sister in laws) have finally met up and the whiskies that have been tried so far were Glenfarclas 12 yr old, Yamazaki 12 yr old, Hakushu 12 yr old, Glenmorangie Nectar D'or and Amrut Fusion.
